Genre-
The genre of this film is romantic drama. The romance side to this can be seen straight away, as the couple are framed tightly together in a medium, long two shot. By being so close in the picture it is evident that they are attracted to each other, which shows the romance genre. However, from the film poster you cannot tell something negative will happen, which makes the dramatic side to the film lack here.
Representation-
The poster shows a young couple 'holding' each other, which shows a stereotypical loving relationship. The man is holding the woman up, which makes the viewer see him as a 'muscular' man, and this possibly represents how he is her 'rock' and she needs him to be there as a support system, which is a very stereotypical way to show the couple.
Narrative-
The narrative of the film is one that is very complex, and so, the poster doesn't present the negative aspects of the relationship. By showing the strong male and weak female in a 'perfect' set up, this will make the viewer question what is really going on and therefore encourage them to view the trailer or watch the actual film. The name of the film "The Vow" does a lot for the narrative, as it makes you question what this could actually mean. When people think of vows they think of eternal love and weddings, and by having this so clearly on the film poster it makes you assume that these vows could be being challenged, which presents the narrative well as the film follows the couple trying to rebuild their relationship.
Audience-
By showing the couple and having "inspired by true events" this shows that the film is evidently for more mature audiences, as a 'real' relationship is something very complicated and young people would be unable to follow the true events in question. The high-key lighting and bright colours make the target audience seem more likely to be women, and because of the mature content, those of an older age. However, as the film follows a young couple, this may not seem as appealing to those who have already settled down, and so the audience would not be very old either. This shows that the audience of this film is likely to be women from an age of around 15-mid 20's.
Media Language-
The tight framing shows us who the film is focused around and this gives us a sense of narrative straight away. As well as this, the background is blurred slightly, which makes the couple your main focus point automatically. The man is wearing long sleeves and dark(ish) colours, which contrasts with the woman wearing no sleeves and light, pure white. This presents that he is in a negative state, which could in fact present the narrative. High-key lighting is used which shows the film has a positive edge to it, as well as this, bright colours are used. Both of these show that the film has a good outcome and ending, which shows who the audience should be through this alone.
